Oscar winning actor and environmentalist Leonardo DiCaprio took to Twitter today (17 October) to confirm he has invested in plant-based food company Beyond Meat.
DiCaprio posted the below tweet:
The actor, 43, has long been involved in environmental causes and was the executive producer of documentary Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret.
The Wolf of Wall Street star is not the only famous name who's invested in the Los Angeles based Beyond Meat; Microsoft Bill Gates poured some of his money into the company in 2013, after sampling their Beyond Chicken and stating he couldn't tell the difference between the plant-based meat and the real thing.
Beyond Meat was founded in 2009 by CEO Ethan Brown, who, after witnessing the treatment of farm animals (his father had a dairy farm in Maryland), became vegan and later decided to create his own meat substitute, disappointed by the poor options available on the market at the time.
The company is known for products such as Beyond Chicken, Beyond Beef, Beyond Burger and The Beast, a vegan burger pattie.
In the USA Beyond Meat are sold in many outlets, including Whole Foods and Target. They are yet to have a presence outside of North America, however their website states that they are hoping to start distributing internationally in the near future.
