Taste Test: The Best Vegan Ice Cream

Vegan ice cream has really come a long way in the last year. There are now several brands on the market that make vegan ice cream so good, it leaves nothing to be desired from its dairy counterpart. We tried and tested what's on the market and these five are our pick of the bunch.

The Winner: Booja-Booja

One of the first and still the best on the market. Booja-Booja is creamy, comes in lots of flavours, and uses very few ingredients to create this frozen deliciousness. Its main ingredient is cashew milk, and little else really, just agave syrup, water and flavours. Booja-Booja ticks all the boxes, satisfies your craving for ice cream and has nothing to envy to dairy versions and that's why it's the winner of our taste test.
Flavours: Caramel Pecan Praline, Hazelnut Chocolate, Ginger, Vanilla, Chocolate Salted Caramel, Raspberry and Coconut.
Priced at £4.99 and available from Waitrose, Ocado, Wholefoods and health food shops.

Runner Up: Alpro

It was really close between Alpro and Booja-Booja as they are both equally delicious, but we took away a point here simply because Alpro has less of a flavour choice, however as texture and taste goes, this is equally as good as the winner.
Alpro is made with soy milk and is really flavoursome and exceedingly creamy. If we didn't know this ice cream was vegan, we honestly couldn't tell it wasn't made with dairy milk. All three flavours are excellent and made with reduced sugar. Alpro is also the most affordable vegan ice cream out of these five.
Flavours: Vanilla, Hazelnut Chocolate and Coconut.
Priced at £3.50 and available from Sainsbury, Asda,Tesco, Ocado, Waitrose and Morrisons.

3 - Ben & Jerry's

The vegan world rejoiced when Ben & Jerry's vegan ice cream was recently launched in the UK.
Made with almond milk, Ben & Jerry's is indeed delicious and if you've missed their dairy frozen treat, this will definitely take care of your saudade
Creamy, tasty and it comes in three of the brand's signature, overloaded flavours. Whilst delicious it came in third place for two main reasons: the flavours are great, but sometimes we just want something a little simpler, like a straight vanilla and it's not yet that easy to find. We literally had to hunt it down and eventually we found it in Tesco in Hackney (where else!).
Flavours: Peanut Butter & Cookies, Chunky Monkey and Chocolate Fudge Brownie.
Priced at £5.50 and available from Tesco and Ben & Jerry's ice cream parlours.

4 - Almond Dream

This almond milk ice cream comes three flavours and it's really yummy, with a good, natural taste. We loved the texture but it's not quite as creamy as the others and although we are huge fans of almonds, this nutritious nut is definitely detectable, especially in the vanilla flavour, so it you are not an almond fan, this is probably not for you. Although make no mistake, we did like it a lot, but then again, we are nuts about almonds.
Flavours: Vanilla, Mint Chocolate Chip, Salted Caramel.
Priced at £3.99 and available from Whole Foods, Waitrose, Ocado and health food shops.

5 - Coyo

Coyo split opinions at Ethica Magazine HQ. Some of us loved it, some of us weren't so sure. It's made with coconut milk and the flavour of the exotic fruit is definitely dominant. Whilst creamy, it really has to be eaten at the right temperature: too cold it becomes quite icy, too soft it gets quite fatty, heavy and almost a little foamy. This is not to say that it's not nice, but it works best as an accompaniment to a pie or a tart than eaten on its own. Also at £7.99 it's the most expensive of the lot.
Flavours: Chocolate (our favourite and the one with a less prominent coconut flavour), Natural and Vanilla Nutmeg.
Priced at £7.99 and available from Whole Foods, John Lewis, Planet Organic, Fortnum and Mason, and independent health food shops.
