You can be a wizard at makeup but if you don't use the right base for your skin type and tone, all that painting work is ruined by an unsuitable canvas. Different skin textures and colours need different foundation formulas, so when you pick your next base, think not just about what you like, but what really works for you and remember to check your tone, whether it's warm, cool or neutral. This will make all the difference.
I've tried and tested many vegan and cruelty-free foundations and these five have really impressed me.
This vegan liquid foundation is, in my opinion, one of the best on the market. It has a very dewy and fresh finish, dries quickly, is packed with hydrating hyaluronic acid and is perfect for those with sensitive skin. The only downside is that the darker shades are really limited so it's unfortunately not suitable for darker skin.
Kat Von D's Lock It Foundation has become a bit of a cult product. It's a matte foundation and has quite a heavy coverage, so works well for those who want to cover blemishes and imperfections. It comes in 12 shades and there's a decent choice for darker skin.
A light to medium coverage foundation with a natural and dewy finish. It comes in a pen with an attached brush for ease of application. Best for those who want a natural, not too heavy look. It comes in 8 shades with three for darker tones.
This foundation has been created to be used on problem skin and after medical procedures. It utilises the patented Ceravitae™ Complex, aloe and seven layer silica gel technology to promote new cell production. It glides beautifully on the skin, covers a myriad of sins without looking cakey or mask like, stays put all day and is waterproof. It also has quite the celebrity following and counts Gal Gadot, Kate Bosworth and FKA Twigs as fans.
This lightweight, medium coverage foundation works well on all skin types as it's non greasy, absorbs excess oils and has a radiant finish. It stays put all day and its creamy texture makes it a dream to apply.
